Usually to run any ADHOC queries, we make use of the SYSDUMMY1 table. Mostly to get the CURRENT TIMESTAMP or to assign a system value to a HOST variable. In these scenarios, it is advisable to use SET (SET :HOST-VAR = CURRENT TIMESTAMP), because it is lot of times cheaper to use SET than SYSDUMMY1.
