One can read the title of this blog post in 2 ways. It can be read as an application that is being moved from Mainframe to a newer technology. Or it can be read as a long-time mainframe programmer who is trying to move out to learn a latest technology.
Being a long-time mainframe programmer myself with over 13 years of experience, I have also thought for a good amount of time to step onto a different technology. I have had quite a few discussions with my colleagues, attended few trainings, did some self-learning (primarily ETL tools), but in vain, until my current project.
My application is migrated from Mainframe to Azure SQL Database successfully and I am also in the path of learning Azure. I am planning to share few posts on how the migration has happened and some of the learnings during this migration.
My new platform is developed with .Net, Transact-SQL, Azure SQL database. As I had a good working knowledge on IBM DB2, it was quite easy to start working on Transact-SQL queries. Most of the backend application (batch jobs) can be developed with just Transact-SQL. Front end part of the application is developed using .Net, HTML, CSS, JavaScript, which I am in process of gaining expertise.
In the future posts, I will add more details on the migration (Moving out of Mainframe).
