Usually we would like to provide more details about what a sort control statement is doing.
Or
We would like to modify existing control statement, and if we would like to show both old and new statements
We can make use of comments. And we can make a SORT statement as a comment by placing “*” in the first character of the statement.
Also we can place comments at end of each sort statement leaving a single space character after the statement.
In the below example, we can see both comments and commented out code
//STEP01 EXEC PGM=SORT
//SYSPRINT DD SYSOUT=*
//SORTIN DD DISP=SHR,DSN=YOUR.INPUT.FILE
//SORTOUT DD DSN=YOUR.OUTPUT.FILE,
// DISP=(NEW,CATLG,DELETE),
// SPACE=(CYL,(5,1),RLSE),
// DCB=(RECFM=FB,LRECL=30,BLKSIZE=0)
//SYSOUT DD SYSOUT=*
//SYSIN DD *
* INCLUDE ONLY RECORDS WHICH HAVE CURRENT DATE
SORT FIELDS=COPY
* INCLUDE COND=(1,8,CH,GT,DATE1)
INCLUDE COND=(1,8,CH,EQ,DATE1) $DATE-FORMAT IS CCYYMMDD
